Let’s switch gears here a bit…. This past Friday we were lucky enough to be invited down to The Wilshire Ebell Theatre to catch Jim James and Carl Broemel of My Morning Jacket perform an intimate 2 piece, stripped down opening set for the (somewhat) under the radar country/folk legend, John Prine. The combination of the Ebell’s classic 20’s architecture and Prines packed house of 60-something, fans, steered the night into more of a night out at the opera vibe. A refreshing kick start to our Halloween weekend for sure. More after the jump…

The classic MMJ floor to ceiling, epic guitar solos and crooning vocals were replaced with stripped down acoustic guitars, pedal steel and smooth, understated, vocal harmonies. Above: Jim James and Carl Broemel.

Prine performed songs spanning from his early 70’s work through 2006’s Grammy winning Fair and Square. Complete with protest songs taking a jabs at our current political leaders.

Highlight of the night, Carl and Jim joined Prine and his backing band on stage to finish out the night with the standard “Paradise.”
