| Alabama |
Whatever |

When in 1986 the movie Space Camp was released into theaters I felt a small spot of pride for my hometown of Huntsville (pronounced: huntsvull) Alabama. Since then I’ve met a hand full of expatriates throughout the country and we all commonly reflect about the strangeness of the deep south and of our old city.
Sasha Frere-Jones is not from Huntsville, he’s a writer for the New Yorker and his music pieces ranging from Bun B to the Deftones are magnificent. In June he purchased a typewriter that traces back to 3910 Telstar Circle in Huntsville,AL. Sasha and contributers share a little history about the Rocket City.

Remember that scene in “Fade to Black” where Timbaland asks Jay-Z: “Are you confused?” From the first note of “Splish, splish (y’all don’t really know), the mix seems to ask the same of the listener. The answer is no doubt yes, and Bobby Evans has created a seamless web that we are forced to fall into from the onset. More of the same killer mixes and hard-hitting rap blends that his previous offering “Lead the Field” boasted, with a generous amount of original blends: among them a moment where he actually succeeds in making “Lean wit it, Rock wit it” into a strangely poignant anthem. You’d be hard pressed to find a more stylish feat, and—at least for the time being—you’d be hard pressed to find a rap tape you’d rather listen to.

I don’t know what you thought about 2006. For me it was lucky. It was a year of excitement, anticipation, and getting free. I think most everyone I know has been working their ass off lately on their long-term goals, and towards the end of the year the mood was type restless and hungry for something more.
If you were there, you know what I’m talking about. If you weren’t I wish you were. The party was situated in downtown LA, in a warehouse that had been transformed into a private skate park (thanks and love to Steve Berra and Eric Koston for the spot). As people began to filter in through the small crack in the sliding steel door and crowd around the stage made of skate ramps and the tusk sound system, the tension in the room felt like gathering thunderheads. It’s difficult to explain. I normally try and remain immune from things like holiday introspection, but at eleven thirty it really felt like the future was laid out before us.
